The first hot day of the year has a way of catching people off guard. Suddenly the air con unit that hasn’t been touched since September is being switched on for the first time, and for some homeowners, that’s the moment they discover something isn’t quite right.

At Mazzini Airco, our engineers have been installing and maintaining air conditioning systems across Essex for over 30 years. And every summer, without fail, we take callouts that could have been avoided with a simple pre-season check.

Here are the five checks we’d recommend every Essex homeowner makes before the warm weather arrives.

1. Check Your Air Filters

Blocked or dirty filters are one of the most common causes of poor air conditioning performance, and one of the easiest things to fix. When filters become clogged with dust and debris, your unit has to work harder to push air through, which reduces efficiency and can lead to overheating.

Filters should ideally be cleaned or replaced every three to six months depending on usage. If your unit has been sitting idle over winter, now is a good time to check them. Most wall-mounted units have accessible filter panels, your user manual will show you exactly where they are.

2. Inspect the Outdoor Unit

Your outdoor condenser unit has been exposed to autumn and winter weather, and it’s worth giving it a visual once-over before the summer season begins. Look for:

  • Leaves, debris or dirt blocking the unit’s fins or grilles
  • Any visible damage to the casing or pipework
  • Overgrown plants or garden debris pressing up against the unit

The outdoor unit needs adequate airflow to work efficiently. If it’s being blocked or obstructed, your system will struggle to cool your home effectively even if everything else is working fine.

3. Check the Drainage

Air conditioning units remove humidity from the air as they cool, and that moisture needs somewhere to go. Your unit will have a condensate drain line, and if it becomes blocked, you can end up with water leaking inside your property, which is both damaging and a sign that something needs attention.

Look for any signs of water staining around your indoor unit, and if you’re unsure whether the drainage is clear, an annual maintenance visit from a qualified engineer is the safest way to have it checked properly.

4. Test the Unit Before You Need It

This one sounds simple, but it’s worth doing: switch your system on and run it for 20 to 30 minutes on a cool day before the summer heat arrives. Listen out for unusual noises, check that cool air is being produced, and make sure the remote or controls are responding properly.

Catching a problem in April or May, when our schedules have more flexibility, is far better than calling us in the middle of a heatwave when every engineer in Essex is already booked.

5. Check Refrigerant Levels (Leave This One to Us)

Low refrigerant is a common cause of poor cooling performance, and it’s something only an F-Gas accredited engineer can legally check and top up in the UK. Under UK law, anyone handling refrigerant gases must hold F-Gas certification, and at Mazzini Airco, our entire team is fully F-Gas accredited with over 30 years of industry compliance behind us.

If your unit seems to be running but not producing enough cold air, low refrigerant could be the cause. Don’t let anyone work on your system who can’t demonstrate the right qualifications.

Why an Annual Maintenance Visit Makes All the Difference

While these five checks are a great starting point, there’s no real substitute for a professional annual service. Our maintenance visits cover everything from filter cleaning and drainage inspection to refrigerant checks, electrical testing and a full efficiency review, giving you the confidence that your system is ready to perform when you need it most.

We also offer discounted maintenance packages on units we install, so if Mazzini Airco fitted your system, it’s worth getting in touch to find out what’s available to you.

Regular maintenance doesn’t just prevent breakdowns. It improves energy efficiency, extends the working life of your unit and keeps the air quality in your home at its best.
